Timber Paling Fencing, Built Solid, Built Straight
Treated pine and hardwood paling fences supplied and installed across Werribee, Wyndham and Melbourne's western suburbs. Capped, plinthed, and built to last, not flimsy, not crooked.
The Classic Aussie Backyard Fence, Done Right
A timber paling fence is the most common boundary fence in Melbourne for a reason: it's affordable, looks great, and goes well with almost any home. The catch is the install. A paling fence built poorly will lean, twist and warp within a year, so the difference between a "cheap fencer" and a proper one shows up fast.
Materials we use
- Treated pine palings, H3-treated, suitable for above-ground use, lasts 10β15 years
- Hardwood palings, denser, longer life (15β25 years), naturally rot-resistant
- H4-treated pine posts set in concrete, won't rot at the ground line
- Galvanised nails & brackets, won't rust streaks down the timber
- Capping rail, neatens the top edge and protects the paling tops
- Plinth (kickboard), stops palings rotting at ground level, keeps pets in
Common configurations
- Standard 1.8m paling, capped, with or without plinth
- Lapped & capped, palings overlap on each side for full privacy
- Butted, palings sit edge-to-edge for a flatter look
- Pickets, front-yard or feature pickets in any height/spacing
- Trellis or lattice top, extra height where allowed

Sharing the cost with your neighbour
Under Victoria's Fences Act, the cost of a "sufficient dividing fence" is generally split 50/50. We'll put the quote in writing so you can show your neighbour, and we can install whether they pay their half upfront or you cover it now and recover it later.
Common Questions
How long does a timber paling fence last?
Treated pine: typically 10β15 years. Hardwood: 15β25 years. The biggest factor is the post, if posts are set properly in concrete and the timber stays off the ground (plinth helps), the fence lasts much longer.
Treated pine vs hardwood, which should I pick?
Treated pine if you want the cheapest option that still lasts 10+ years. Hardwood if you want the absolute longest life and you don't mind paying ~30% more upfront.
Can I get a timber fence stained or painted?
Yes, we recommend leaving treated pine to silver naturally for the first 6 months, then staining or painting if you want a specific colour. We can refer a painter or do it as part of the job.
Will the fence stay straight?
Done properly: yes. Posts in concrete every 2.4m, straight string lines, capping across the top to lock palings in place. The reason a lot of paling fences sag is short-cuts on post depth.
Will my neighbour need to agree to the fence?
If it's the dividing fence, they need to be notified. We'll provide a written quote you can share with them. If you can't agree, the Magistrates' Court can decide, though most neighbour conversations end in a 50/50 split.
