Pool Fencing

Pool Fencing That Passes Inspection, First Time

Pool fence non-compliance is one of the most common reasons people fail council inspection in Victoria. We've installed and re-fitted enough pool fences across the western suburbs to know exactly what inspectors look for: gap heights, no-climb zones, latch heights, gate self-closing & self-latching, and CPR sign placement.

Pool fence options

  • Frameless glass, premium, almost invisible look using stainless steel spigots and 12mm toughened glass
  • Semi-frameless glass, clear glass panels in slim aluminium posts, more affordable than frameless
  • Tubular pool fence, vertical aluminium bars, the most cost-effective compliant option
  • Slat-style pool fence, modern aesthetic with compliant spacing and no-climb zones

What "compliant" means in Victoria

The Victorian Building Authority's pool barrier standards (AS 1926.1) cover the rules. Key points we always check on every install:

  • Minimum 1.2m fence height (measured from ground to top of fence)
  • No gaps over 100mm at ground level
  • No climbable horizontal rails or footholds within the no-climb zone (900mm above ground)
  • Self-closing and self-latching gates that open outwards (away from the pool)
  • Latch height at least 1.5m from ground level
  • CPR sign mounted near the pool

Failed an inspection? We can help

If your pool fence has been knocked back by an inspector, send us the report. Common fixes we do every week: re-spacing balusters, raising latch heights, swapping non-compliant gates, removing climbable objects within 900mm of the fence, and reinforcing weak posts.

Pool Fence FAQ

Common Questions

What's the minimum height for a pool fence in Victoria?

1.2m measured from the ground level (or finished floor level for indoor pools) to the top of the fence. There are also "no-climb zone" rules around the fence base.

Do I need a permit for pool fencing?

You typically need a building permit when installing a new pool, and the pool barrier must be inspected and certified. We can refer you to a registered pool safety inspector if needed, or help you choose a fence that meets your existing approval.

Glass vs metal pool fencing, which should I pick?

Glass for the look (and the resale boost). Metal (tubular or slat) for cost and slightly easier compliance. Both are equally safe when installed correctly.

How long does pool fencing last?

Frameless glass with stainless spigots: lifetime, basically. Semi-frameless: 20+ years. Tubular: 15+ years. The glass itself doesn't degrade, the only wear point is hardware.

Can you replace just a few panels of an existing pool fence?

Yes, common for storm damage or accidental breaks. We try to match the existing system rather than replace the whole run.
